What are the effects of playing?

The Tovertafel games improve the well-being of elderly people living with dementia. Our serious games conquer apathy, reduce restless and tense behavior, and increase positive emotions. They also promote physical activity. This is important, because many elderly people living with dementia don’t get enough exercise in nursing homes. The Tovertafel is a great tool to make physical activity fun!

Our games also promote social interaction and enjoyment. This has a beneficial effect on relationships with care professionals, fellow residents and family members. Which is extremely important, because participation in social activities can become increasingly difficult for elderly people living with dementia. The Tovertafel activates players and provides cognitive, physical, social, and sensory stimulation.

These are the levels of our games

The Tovertafel games have levels between 1 and 5. This figure describes the level of anticipated cognitive activity.

Level 1: These games are intended for observation only. We do not offer level 1 games (yet).
Level 2: The players do not only observe the games, but are inquired to keep their attention.
Level 3: These games work toward a particular goal and require players to memorize things. To play level 3 games, the players need to stay focused. Every act is rewarded!
Level 4: It’s possible to make ‘mistakes’ while playing these games. The aim is to make the players think and reason. Their choices impact if they reach the final goal.
Level 5: Level 5 games focus on the part of the brain that controls executive functions, such as including planning and decision making. Note: level 5 games are too challenging for elderly people living in the middle and late stages of dementia.

Stimulate adults with an intellectual disability at their own level and promote social interaction.

Cognitive effects

Games in this category help achieve cognitive effects. Everyone is challenged at their own level and there are lots of opportunities for practicing and making mistakes.
Physical effects

These games can be used to elicit intuitive movements. The projections respond to even the smallest of hand movements of the players. This increases their self-confidence and motivates them to continue playing and moving.
Social effects

Fun is something you experience with each other. Games in this category promote interaction and social contact between care professionals, residents and loved ones who come to visit.
Sensory effects

Stimulating the senses of an elderly person living with dementia has many positive benefits, including mood enhancement. In these games, this is achieved through the use of interactive images and sounds.

Co-design

Tover innovates, develops and designs. When designing games for elderly people living with dementia, we believe it is important to put yourself in their shoes. That's why we develop our products together with our players and their care professionals. This process is what we call co-design.
