The Tovertafel (“magic table”) promotes social connections for adults with intellectual disabilities through its wide range of interactive games. Developed with adults and care professionals, our games are designed to suit different capabilities and can be played alone or in a group. Cognitive effects

The effects of the Tovertafel’s interactive games on adults with intellectual disabilities are simple - they increase alertness and focus and help players’ self-confidence grow. This develops as they become aware of what they are capable of achieving through our games (often to their own surprise!).
Physical effects

The Tovertafel’s virtual games and interactive light projections respond to even the smallest of hand movements and help to train motor skills in adults with intellectual disabilities. This is important as it allows them to explore and understand the world around them.
Social effects

Playing is something you do together. Our games promote social interaction and help adults with intellectual disabilities feel understood and connect with those who care for them. All whilst having fun.
Sensory effects

Exposing adults with an intellectual disability to stimuli in the right way allows them to relax, discover and learn. In our games, this is achieved through interactive images and sounds.

Levels of our games for adults

The Tovertafel’s games and activities have levels between 1 and 5 for adults with intellectual disabilities. This figure has to do with the level of anticipated cognitive activity, so we can make sure that all of our games can have a positive influence on their players.

Level 1: These games are intended for observation only. We do not offer level 1 games (yet).
Level 2: These games allow the players to not only observe but also hold their attention.
Level 3: These games work toward a particular goal and require players to memorise things. To play level 3 games, the players need to stay focused. Every move is rewarded!
Level 4: It’s possible to make ‘mistakes’ while playing these games. The aim is to make the players think and reason. Their choices impact if they reach the final goal.
Level 5: Level 5 games focus on the part of the brain that controls executive functions, such as planning and decision-making. All Tovertafel games for adults with intellectual disabilities have game levels between 1 and 5. This figure describes the level of anticipated cognitive activity.

Co-design

Tover innovates, develops, and designs. When designing games for adults with intellectual disabilities, we know it’s important to put yourself in their shoes. That’s why we develop our products together with adults with intellectual disabilities and those who care for them. We call this process co-design.
